The 10 year anniversary of the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba named Gitmo has come and gone. This detainment center for terrorists has been referred to as un-American, when others have named it a matter of national security. Bush started the plan and Obama has promised to close the system just after his 2008 campaign.
Given that 2002, 779 guys have been jailed at Gitmo without charges brought against them, their ages range from 12 to 89. President George W. Bush began the system just after the start off of the Afghanistan war. The United States necessary Gitmo for a place to question terrorist, but not a location to torture men and women. This is a country of laws not a nation of lawlessness.
America calls itself the land of the no cost and home of the brave but does Gitmo serve America well? History has confirmed this not to be the case. Hundreds of people detained at Gitmo are innocent, a majority of the folks detained had been operating from the US military when they had been dropping bombs and cleaning out tiny towns.
Camps such as Gitmo are designed to remain open for a brief time or the duration of a war. One instance come from world war two, not the concentration camps in Europe but the one concentration camp built-in the USA for American Japanese citizens. The United States had to uncover out who was loyal to Japan. Just after Pearl Harbor the camps had been set up and the military began to arrest America Japanese citizens.
In the presidential elections of 2008, then candidate Obama promised to close Gitmo. Obama stated this torture camp need to be closed mainly because it was unconstitutional and against the Geneva convention guidelines. Three years into his presidency, Gitmo remains open with no end in sight.
It appears Obama has altered his tone when it come to Gitmo. His reasoning for not closing Gitmo is based on the republicans in Congress unwillingness to aid along with other states not willing use their empty jails for the remaining Gitmo residents. In the meantime Gitmo remains open with no plans on a closing date.
